The Department of Archaeology is Hiring
The Triumphant(?) Return of Fiction Friday: the best 100 word story you will read this week.
Barks and blood-curdling screams expired together.
Whoever coined the name “laughing” had clearly never been hunted by a pack of hyenas.
McAllister was dead. His arc through Kirsten’s life: mentor, lover, ex-lover, and career impediment had terminated at “murder victim.” Both the archeological dig and Department Chair were hers to claim.
She sat in the jeep and smiled, turning the key to…
Silence.
Shakily lifting the hood revealed the sabotage. In place of the battery, raw meat, weighting a note in McAlister’s hand:
“Insurance.”
The yip to her right startled her.
Those to left, back, and front sealed her fate.
Author’s Note: This was writen for the NYC Midnight microfiction challenge finals. (Woot! Woot!) The challenge was to write a 100-word story in 24 hours, any genre. It had to contain the word “lift” in some form and had to include the action of “laughing.” I hope you enjoy it. It was fun to write.
